John Worsfold - President 2011

I feel honored to be your president for the next three years, having been a member of the

club for nearly 50 years.

My playing career commenced with the then called under 21’s team followed by several

years in the 1st XV.  My first XV captain was Jonathan Straker and it is a pleasure to take

over the reins from him as president.

I had a few years break from Warlingham in the late 60’s when I lived and played in South

Africa for Hamiltons and a British passport only club called The Cape Buccaneers which

I captained.  On my return to England I rejoined Warlingham as Manager of the Colts.

I cannot leave out my wife Sue for she has been at my side from the start of my

association with Warlingham, supporting the club as a tea lady for many seasons and over

the last few years helping me to organise the Golden Oldies event.

This season has had its ups and downs, but more ups than down.  The 1st XV has finished a

very creditable 4th in the league and would have finished higher but for several close losses.

The weather has also caused a certain amount of disruption with a very wet autumn followed

by one of the coldest winters for 20 years.

The Extra 1st XV must be congratulated on winning their league.  My observation of the

1st XV and all the teams is that a wonderful spirit and camaraderie exists which is the

back bone of Warlingham R.F.C and it is what makes it a great club and a pleasure to attend.

Long may it remain.

One can not leave out our stalwart supporters, many who have become Friends of Warlingham.

It is great boost to any side to have this bank of supporters on the touch line.

The Minis, under the watchful eye of Karen Newman and others, continue to thrive.  To be at

the club on a Sunday morning and observe more than 200 children being introduced to rugby

is a wonderful sight. It is a credit to all the coaches, Mums and Dads etc. that make these

mornings exceptional.  The club thanks them for their continued hard work.

It is not easy to obtain sponsors in this difficult climate.  The need for funds is always there and

I would ask members to think of any ideas that could be actioned to assist the club in raising

funds, and bring the suggestions to me.

I now look forward to continued fun and enjoyment from the rugby and from being with

friends at Warlingham Rugby Club during my term as president.
